Cathodic Protection

WHAT IS CATHODIC PROTECTION?

When metals are exposed to air and moisture over time, the metal begins to break down in a process called corrosion. Cathodic protection is a method of protecting metal from that process and preventing rust and corrosion from forming.

These systems are used to protect things like…

  • Underground storage tanks (USTs)
  • Pipelines
  • Coated wires
  • Reinforcement bars in piers and seawalls
  • And more

Cathodic protection is conducted by installing anodes into the ground, water or concrete where the metal component needing protection is submerged. The anodes are made of “active” metal substances, meaning its electrons move more freely. These electrons travel to the metal being protected (also known as the cathode), and replace the electrons it is losing due to reactions with the substance its submerged within. As long as the electrons from the anode arrive to the cathode before oxygen molecules do, the process will prevent corrosion from occurring.
